Medicine Ball Runs

E-mail Print PDF

Today, in spite of the mid-90 temperature, we ran.

We did 12 reps of running 200M with a 20lbs medicine ball (Mike) or 14lbs medicine ball (Oz).  We rested 1 minute between rounds.

If not for the heat, we could have run quite a bit more.

Unexpectedly Delicious Thai Spicy Beef Salad

E-mail Print PDF

This recipe was taken from the book The Best of Vietnamese and Thai Cooking by Mai Pham published in 1996.

Unfortunately, there is no picture.  The reason is that I did not expect this dish to blow me away, but it did.  I have had many similar dishes, including in Thai Town in Chicago, but this dish by Oz was outstanding even by those standards.  This dish was interesting because in my opinion you could leave out the meat and it would still be addictive.  This would be the perfect salad to serve to a salad hater - instant transformation!

In this dish you first make the sauce:

1/4 Cup of lime juice (fresh)

1 1/2 tbsp fish sauce

2 tbsp brown sugar

2-5 Thai bird or serrano Chilies (we used serrano)

Set sauce aside.

Cook 1 pound New York Strip steak and slice thinly (1/4 inch)

Toss steak and the sauce with:

1/2 small red onion thinly sliced

1/2 fresh pinapple peeled and cored (we grilled it!)

1/4 cup thai basal leaves (we got them from our garden)

1/2 small cucumber, thinly sliced

Spoon the above onto a bed of lettuce (we used Boston lettuce).

Although we only used 1 serrano, it was a hot one.  The salad is a flavor explosion of salty (fish sauce), sweet (pinapple) and spicy (serrano).  I have the freakish quality of not liking pineapple.  I have tried to like pineapple.  Unlike whole tomato which I love to hate, I have always wanted to like pineapple.  But I don't.  I just don't.  I find the taste unpleasant.  In this dish, the sweetness of the grilled pineapple was actually refreshing and welcome.  In addition, it added some nice acidity to the dish.  Oz made it and, per Oz, it was quick and easy.  Definitely give this one a try.

Cleans and Cindy

E-mail Print PDF

This afternoon we worked out hard:

10 Clean and Jerks (Mike used 80lbs; prescribed was 95lbs)

5 Rounds of Cindy:

     5 Pullups

     10 Pushups

     15 Airsquats

10 Clean and Jerks

5 More rounds of Cindy

10 Clean and Jerks

Totals:

30 Clean and Jerks

50 Pull ups

100 Pushups

150 Air Squats

It took me 37 minutes, much of which was cooling down and catching my breath.

Oz did it a little faster.  Kudos to Oz: today she used no bands for pullups.  That is a milestone!  Oz did not jerk today due to shoulder issues.

Great workout.

CANAPE POP-UP RESTAURANT WILMINGTON, NC

E-mail Print PDF

We were excited to learn that Wilmington will have

its first "pop-up" restaurant open on August 22.  The name

of the restaurant is Canape.

We will be there.  Learn more and purchase

tickets at their website: http://www.canapeilm.com/canape/

The menu sounds exciting and if there may be an element of molecular gastronomy.

A little bit Alinea and a little bit WD-50?

There will not be a wine pairing so either bring your own or order

from the wine list at Manna.

We hope to see you there.

Kistler 2005 Vine Hill Chardonnay

E-mail Print PDF

This weekend we opened another bottle of Kistler Vine Hill Chardonnay 2005 Russian River Valley.  This wine is creeping toward the end of its "drinkable dates" and our worst nightmare would be to let it go to waste!

In keeping with the theme of my previous post about how differently the same wine can taste, this one was different even from January.

In my tasting note from January 2011, I said:

"The color is deep yellow/golden. On the nose is orange and vanilla.  Palate: Orange creamsicle, chestnuts and oak.  Full bodied."

This weekend we paired this with a Moroccan Chicken Tagine that Oz prepared here at home.  It was outstanding and I wish that I had taken a photograph.  Its not the most beautiful dish, but the flavors are unusual, exotic and delicious.  I will take a picture next time.  The Kistler paired well, but this time the wine had more of a "scorched earth" on both the nose and the taste.  A little unexpected.  I enjoyed the wine but the sweetness and orange creamsicle was nowhere to be found.  Of course, isn't that what makes pairing wines with different foods interesting?  I would argue that its actually kind of what makes wine so fascinating.  The chestnuts were pretty much in keeping with the scorched earth theme, they were just more pronounced with this dish.

As I blogged a while ago, Kistler has increased its production and availability so it is going to be interesting to see whether they maintain the same standards and quality.  I am hoping that they will, as it would be a real loss to lose such an outstanding American producer of quality Chardonnay.  With the increasing number of "cult wines" out there today, the pressure really falls on Kistler to maintain their standards.  There are currently so many lists that it would be very easy at this point to drop one and pick up another.  A great position for the American consumer to have such a range of quality choices in wine.

Kistler 2006 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

{jcomments on}We opened this with Indian food tonight.  It was a good California Pinot Noir.  Typical light color and candy apple nose.  On the palate, I felt as if it were a bit too fruit forward.  Maybe all the French wines we have been drinking recently?  It was smooth and well balanced.  Initial tannins softened quickly.  A little too much bright red fruit on the palate.  Medium finish.
